Fall Writing Frenzy
The kidlit world is full of fun opportunities to spread your writing wings. Here are a couple I have entered this year:
Vivian Kirkfield's #50preciouswords Contest 2026, where you write a complete story in just 50 words. She also has a contest for children to encourage literacy. Such fun!

Susannah Leonard Hill's Valentiny contest 2026 (2nd week of February): This year it was to write a Valentine story appropriate for children (children here defined as ages 12 and under) maximum 214 words in which someone feels SUPERSTITIOUS.

This fall, I decided to enter the Fall Writing Frenzy Contest hosted by literary agent Kaitlyn Sanchez (Fall Writing Frenzy creator and co-host) and award-winning author and poet, Lydia Lukidis (Fall Writing Frenzy co-host).

The rules are simple:
The entry can be a poem, a story, a mood piece, or whatever comes to mind. Happy, scary, beautiful, grotesque- for any kidlit age, board book to YA.
I thought the format of a gardener's advice column would be fun
(in the vein of Dear Abby.... Am I dating myself? ;)
I was off and running!
Scroll through the photos that they offer and see which one speaks to you.
Maybe because I am starting to clean out my garden and all the dead plants,
I chose this one. I started imagining a zombie upset
that his garden was growing colorful roses
when all he wanted was brown, brittle, dead stalks.
