Digger Trucks

Updated: 6 days ago

There's something magical about trucks that takes my grandson, Ronan away in his imagination. Mail trucks, construction trucks, garbage trucks, and even my husband's Silverado parked in the driveway.

ree

But his favorite construction truck is an excavator. He loves to sing Blippi's Excavator song. You can listen here. Beware, it is catchy!

ree

Awakening from his afternoon nap, on the days I watch him, he pulls to his feet, stares at the window and points.

"Grampie's truck,!" he says loud and clear.

ree

So our routine begins. I lift him to a nice, warm, sleepy hug. Then, parked on my hip, we make our way to the window. As the shade rises, Ronan blocks his eyes for a minute, "Bright light," he confirms, while I slide the window open.

And for a while, we just stay there, feeling the air, listening to birds and talking about Grampie's truck.

"Grampie's Truck!!!" he repeats with a big smile. "Drive it!" he adds. I chuckle.

Garbage truck days are awesome of course, but our favorite recent activity is pulling into the parking area across from a construction site near me, and watching the 4 excavators scoop and pour their loads into dump trucks. I imagine we could spend the day there with no problem.

Needless to say, as his birthday rolled around, I wanted to give him an excavator. And with Halloween around the corner, Pinterest did not disappoint, giving me quite a few ideas. Armed with a black foam core board, a few boxes from "Green Chef," an Exacto knife, and duct tape, I was off.

I even found some push-on lights for the front, which were the biggest hit!

As you can see, he eventually warmed up to it. I'm not sure yet if he will actually step into it and wear it with the construction vest and hat... but what can you expect from a 2-year-old!

Ronan's construction birthday cake

This morning, in honor of Poetry Friday yesterday, I wrote an excavator poem for Ronan.  Enjoy!

Cathy! Five stars for that excavator! And for the poem! And all of it!! I was smiling and nodding all the way through, imagining all the truck and vehicle interactions we have with our (three-year-old) grandson; even his little bike is his "truck" that he takes everywhere. He has to "drive" (play in) Baba's truck a lot, and even my little red mini-SUV when that's what we take. Also, Yep - we know that Blippi song.... ;0) Robyn HB

I feel like it is innate in Ronan, something he was born with. We stopped by a local farm the other day, and it was the big tractors with their huge wheels that were the hit. I checked some construction/ truck books out of the library the other day, and yesterday was the first time that little rambunctious 2-year-old actually sat still to read a book! Even grabbed the book and said- Ronan read it!" Love it!

Cathy, oh my goodness. I love your excavator. So, so good. Your poem, with all its fun rhymes and rhythm, is a delight. I can relate to this whole post. I have a 3-year-old grandson, Milo, who is very similar. I didn't have to click on Blippi's link since I can now sing the whole song without it. Excavators are Milo's favorite too.

Hi Denise, Thanks for stopping by. The rhythm of the poem just started flowing when I thought of all the excavator verbs. It was fun... and Blippi... well you know. The young kids love him. What a fun way for him to make a living! Happy writing :)

You are the best kind of grandmother. I love that you get to be such a part of Ronan's life and that Grampie's truck is something special between the two of you. My goodness, that must make such a bittersweet time with more of sweet in the balance for you. And, that costume and cake are aMAZeballs! I love them. I love how much we can love the little people in our lives. What a gift this guy has -- a poem his grandmother wrote for him when he was perfectly two. Yes, a gift.

Thanks for stopping by Linda and for your kind words. Being a grandmother is all that it’s cracked up to be. I have so much fun with all seven of them. But you’ve got me thinking I never really thought of the poem being a gift to Ronan. He would enjoy someday. But now I think I might need to get writing poems for the other six . That might be a nice little framed gift from Grammy for Christmas.

Cathy, this poem is wonderful. You captured sounds and sights with ease. The verbs stand out and your little grandson looks very interested in what you created. My youngest grandgirl (2 Years) is also intrigued by Matt Forrest Esenwine's Tractor Dance Board Book for little ones. I hope to read it at the preschool Lila attends.

Thank you so much, Carol. Yes! Tractor dance yes. I’m definitely gonna go check that one out. It would be a good mentor test for me if I turn this into a board book.
